INCREDIBLE - Vintage Antique Quizzing Glass pendant - 18k Gold
Modern eyeglasse with stems that rest on our ears, were invented in the mid 18th century. Until then, reading aids were either balanced on the nose or were hand held. A "quizzing glass" or a “quizzer” was a single magnifying lens on a handle which was held up to the eye to magnify the object in view.
They were popular in Europe from the late 18th century through early 20th century. A quizzer would have ben worn on a long chain for both for easy reach and to be fashionable.
This quizzer is very fine and particularly unique. It is Icelandic in origin and is crafted in 18k solid gold. It has marks for maker and gold purity, though the maker is illegible to my eye.
Piece measures approximately 2.5 inches overall length with a 28mm diameter lens bezel. Total weight is 11.55 grams. Condition is excellent and the lens really works!

I saw it. I fell in love with it. I had to have it. With a short text and a phone call to Jill, it became mine. I truly did not think that it would be possible for me to wear this beautiful piece as the original rolo-link chain that the stone hung from was only 16.5 inches in length. I needed at least a 20 inch chain. Undaunted, Jill told me that she would look for a longer chain in the same rolo-link style but with a lobster clasp that I prefer. Not long after I received a video showcasing the longer chain that Jill had found to replace the original shorter one. Jill’s video contained dialogue with close-ups of the chain as she dangled it over and through her fingers. After giving her my enthusiastic approval, I had the pendant on the new longer chain within a day or two, and it was perfect. I wore my beautiful quartz pendant for the first time on Mother’s Day and received several compliments on it. Thank you, Jill, for making my wish come true. ❤️
