About Siv Lagerström

Rings designed by Swedish designer Siv Lagerström in the period of 1967-1973. She was a midcentury silver smith who began experimenting with alternative materials at the end of the 1960s.

Lagerström's acrylic rings represented a new artistic expression with new materials that broke away from the conventions of what a piece of jewelry should look like. Her rings resonated with and were considered alongside Pierre Cardin's futuristic, colorful fashion for women’s liberation. Think collarless geometric shapes, daringly short hemlines, graphic bright colors.

The expression was more important than expensive materials, in a democratic spirit. Her work also bears similarities to the Op art of the 1960s with psychedelic abstract patterns in motion, creating a three-dimensional sculptural sensation.

Lagerström's pieces are very collectible and examples of her work are on display at the National Museum, Sweden.

This one makes quite a statement. Suspended within the clear acrylic is a vibrant green cone-shaped form that creates one of the most dramatic optical effects in the series.

Viewed from above, the green element appears as a perfectly centered circle floating within crystal-clear acrylic. From the side, however, the cone-shaped insert expands visually, making the entire top of the ring appear saturated with rich green color. The effect changes beautifully with movement, constantly shifting depending on the angle and the light.

I love how chic this design feels. What begins as a simple geometric form becomes a fascinating study in color, depth, and perception. The vivid green interior contrasts beautifully with the transparent acrylic, creating exactly the bold, futuristic look that made Lagerström's designs so distinctive during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
